Could the new #Tariffs make electronics more expensive?
The broad #Tariffs went into effect last Friday with no extensions or rollbacks so far.
In fact, the White House seems to be doubling down, rolling out even more this week. Some are being used as policy pressure like the extra 25% on India for buying Russian oil while others are more carrot than stick like Apple’s $100B US manufacturing investment which could help it avoid some #Tariffs.
However, most of the market focus is on industry-specific #Tariffs especially Pharmaceuticals and Semiconductors.
On the pharma side, not much yet… just threats of 250% #Tariffs. That alone had healthcare stocks lagging.
The bigger spotlight is on semis where the White House just signaled 100% #Tariffs are coming soon.
However, there’s a caveat-companies investing in the US may avoid the #Tariffs all together. This could benefit companies like TSMC and Samsung, who are building chip factories in the US even if most of their production is still overseas.
That’s a win for the #AI chip supply chain which uses bleeding-edge, advanced chips.
But for consumer electronics like phones and laptops? That’s where it could hurt. Even while the CPU may be safe, the rest of the components might get swept up in #Tariffs especially the ones built on older technology nodes.
Bottom line: We may see costs rise on electronics, even high-end ones as products refresh for the holiday shopping season.
Now, there’s nothing’s official on the semi #Tariffs yet, but details are expected next week. And remember, these are separate from the broad #Tariffs already imposed last Friday.
So yes, your next iPhone might cost more even if they don’t update the camera again…
